1. North Atlanta (Map)
North Atlanta offers spacious affluent Mansions typically on 3/4 acre lots or larger. Here you can live within 30 minutes of the busiest airport in the world but not be so close to hear all the planes overhead. Zip codes of 30305, 30319, 30342, and 30341 offer the lowest crime rates in Atlanta along with the best schools and shopping. More info.
Marietta (where I live) borders Atlanta immediately to the north and offers a city feel yet tranquil enough to enjoy the suburbia life, especially in the East Cobb area. The best zip codes to live in here with the best schools (Pope and Walton) are 30062, 30068 and 30067. More info.
3. Lake Lanier (Map)
Lake Lanier is Georgia's largest lake just 1 hour NE of Atlanta. It is fed by two rivers: the Chattahoochee and the Chestatee. The beautiful aqua green/ emerald blue lake encompasses 38,000 acres of water, and 692 miles of shoreline. 4. Alpharetta (Map)
Alpharetta is home to a thousand equestrian farms and 3,600 businesses. It is located just north of Roswell and SW of Lanier. It is one of the most affluent communities in the state. In 2009, Forbes ranked Alpharetta as the number 1 "reloville" in the United States. More info.
Roswell is just NE of Marietta. All areas of Roswell have very low crime rates and sophisticated and quaint shops. Highway 400 makes a quick escape to Lake Lanier, The Blue Ridge Mountains or to Atlanta heading south. More info.
6. Johns Creek (Map)
Johns Creek is a suburban city in Fulton County since Dec. 1, 2006. It is bounded by Roswell to the SW, and Alpharetta to the NW. The 2007 population estimate for the city is 70,050. It is the tenth-largest municipality in Georgia and is its wealthiest city. More info.
Dunwoody is a city located in north metro Atlanta part of northern DeKalb County. It became incorporated as a city just in 2008. A recent estimate placed the city's population at 39,583. It is the third wealthiest city in Georgia with a sophisticated metropolitan feel. More info.
8. Sandy Springs (Map)
Sandy Springs, incorporated in 2005, is an vastly affluent suburb just north of Atlanta and is the third-largest city in the Atlanta metropolitan area. Sandy Springs is located in north Fulton County just south of Roswell and west of Dunwoody. Some of the finest luxury mansions in the 1990's were built here. More info.
Buckhead is an upscale uptown district within the city of Atlanta. It comprises about one-fifth of the city to the north. Buckhead is mostly suburban in appearance yet with a highly urbanized center with many high-rises (businesses and condos) centered along Peachtree Road and GA-400. More info.
